How to fix a hole in the wall drywall - Position the patch over the hole and secure it to the backing strips with screws. Use a drywall knife to cover the patch with spackling compound or lightweight joint compound in a crisscross pattern feathering the edges so it blends with the wall. Cut a piece of drywall to fit the hole. For holes that don t extend to studs on either side you will need to reinforce the hole.
The challenge of patching holes in drywall is in covering the gap. To feather the edge increase pressure and angle on the drywall knife as you reach the outer edges of the patch area to minimize or thin the compound on the drywall. Joint compound is fine for filling cracks but won t work for small holes bigger than a quarter. Measure the hole then cut a scrap piece of drywall that is slightly larger than the hole s diameter.
Keep the screws about 1 inch from the edges of the patch and space them 6 inches apart. If the hole is less than 4 inches wide use a peel and stick patch to cover. You can create your own patch to repair larger holes in drywall. Install the drywall patch.
It doesn t have to be a snug fit but the seams should be not more than about 1 8 inch wide.
